The recommendations in this section are using the RoI fertiliser classification system and are based on Teagasc research. Due to slight differences between the RoI and NI classification systems, these recommendations are only a guide for Northern Ireland farmers. They can be converted between the RoI and NI classification systems using this CONVERSION TABLE
The objective is to apply fertiliser to pastures in order to produce a grass supply that meets the imposed stocking rate throughout the season (see
Guide To Index System for guide to calculating livestock units). For optimum production from intensive grazing land, high soil fertility is required and soils should be maintained at Index 3. The definition of intensive farming is a difficult one and varies depending on soil types and stocking rates.
The
amount of fertiliser required is very dependent
on:
a) the farming system and
b) the stocking rate.
For convenience, stocking rates/farming
enterprises (Dairy and Beef) have been divided
into three categories. In this section, the
application rates given are guidelines only, other
combinations of phosphorus and potash can be used
from our extensive range of
products.
