Recommendations : : Grazing (Beef High Stocking Rate)

The recommendations in this section are using the RoI fertiliser classification system and are based on Teagasc research. Due to slight differences between the RoI and NI classification systems, these recommendations are only a guide for Northern Ireland farmers. They can be converted between the RoI and NI classification systems using this CONVERSION TABLE

Before choosing your fertiliser products please consult your local advisor to ensure that you do not exceed the limits for your farm as determined by the nitrates directive (SI no 378) of 2006.

Beef: High Stocking Rate (1.1-1.2 LU/acre)
Table 14.
Index N P K
1 Very Low 202.4 23 60
2 Low 202.4 15 36
3 Medium 202.4 7 12
4 High 202.4 0 0
Figures in the table above are applicable to farmers in Zone B.

Nitrogen levels given are guidelines only, the maximum application rates of nitrogen are:

For farmers in
Zone A, increase (N) to a max of 204.7 units/acre
Zone B, increase (N) to a max of 202.4 units/acre
Zone C, increase (N) to a max of 200.1 units/acre
Zone D, increase (n) to a max of 197.8 units/acre
Phosphorous levels given are the maximum permitted levels.

For farmers in
Zone A, increase max (P) limits by 1.1 unit/acre excluding Index 4
Zone C, decrease max (P) limits by 1.1 unit/acre excluding Index 4
Zone D, decrease max (P) limits by 2.3 units/acre excluding Index 4

At high stocking rates large amounts of nutrients are removed, therefore the fertiliser requirements are high. It must be noted that some of the higher Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) recommendations should be split over the grazing year with the Nitrogen (N) (e.g. P1 K4).

For all situations, apply C.A.N., Sweetgrass or Urea to satisfy the extra Nitrogen requirement as recommended by your advisor.
Richland: 22.7 - 2.5 - 5 + 3% Sulphur (S) + Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), Magnesium (Mg) and Zinc (Zn). This product is ideal for supplying N, P, K and essential trace elements for growing top quality grass and silage.
Sweetgrass: 23% Nitrogen (N) + 2% Sulphur (S) + 1.2% Magnesium (Mg) + 5% Sodium (Na). This product is especially formulated with the grass farmer in mind. The Sulphur and Magnesium will help to increase grass protein while the Sodium will encourage cows to graze grass tighter, thus leaving a lower post grazing height and so making it an excellent grassland management tool. The Sodium will also improve cow dry matter intakes.
Replenish: 18 - 2.5 - 14 + 2% Sulphur (S) + Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), Magnesium (Mg) and Zinc (Zn). This product combines low P and high K, Sulphur and essential trace elements.
Where Sulphur (S) is required, choose a product from our product list with similar N, P, K contents to the products recommended above, and apply. The Teagasc recommended level for grazing is 10-20 units/S/acre/per year. For more information on Sulphur go to Fertiliser index system page.
