Soil Sampling

Soil Sampling is the only way to estimate the pH level in the soil. Teagasc's recommendations for soil sampling are:
As a guideline, take one sample to represent 2 ha. If the area is not uniform, reduce the area represented by one sample. If the area is very uniform, a sample may be taken to represent 4 ha.
Map out discrete areas of the farm that are uniform in soil type, slope, drainage and cropping history.
Take a composite sample of 20 cores in each designated area.
Cores should be taken to a depth of 10cm (4").
Cores should be taken in a "W" pattern across the sampling area.
Avoid unusual spots like old fences, ditches, feeding areas and gateways.
Avoid dung and urine patches, and areas where fertilisers were stored or spilled.
Do not sample for P (Phosphorus) or K (Potassium) for 4-6 months after last fertiliser application. Sample at the same time of year on each occasion.
Sample every 3 years on intensive farms.
Sample every 4-5 years on extensive farms.
Fill in identification form completely.
Enter Map Grid Number or the land parcel number for each sample on the soil form.
Include full information for crops, paying particular attention to stocking rates.
Soil sampling helps to protect the environment by ensuring that the right balance of nutrients is supplied to the soil. Using GRAN - LIME to balance the pH, and by applying the correct levels of N (Nitrogen), P (Phosphorus) or K (Potassium) ensures good uptake of nutrients and minimises losses.
