Protected Urea Products

As part of Irelands Climate Action Plan, agriculture in Ireland has been tasked to reduce both Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and Ammonia emissions. In order to achieve these targets, the Department of Agriculture is proposing to switch 50% of CAN sales to Protected Urea by 2022 and prohibit the use of Urea (replacing with Protected Urea) by 2025 as part of an hollistic approach to tackle climate change.

Nitrogen Losses to the environment

Nitrogen can be lost to the environment through a number of pathways. Urea based products are prone to Nitrogen losses through Volatilisation (Ammonia gas), Denitrification (Nitrous Oxide) and Leaching (Nitrate) while CAN based products are prone to losses through Denitrification and Leaching.

Plants can and prefer to take up Nitrogen as both Ammonium and Nitrate.
When Urea is applied to a soil, soil bacteria (enzymes) known as Urease convert the Urea to Ammonium in a process called “Hydrolysis”. It is during this process that Nitrogen can be lost as Ammonia (NH₃). Soil enzymes known as Nitrobacter and Nitrosomonas convert Nitrite in the soil to Nitrate. Nitrate is then prone to losses as Nitrate (NO₃-)(leaching) or as Nitrous Oxide (N₂O)(Denitrification).

What is NutriSphere-N (NSN)?

NSN is a highly stable, organic carboxylic co-polymer (carbohydrate) which is coated onto Urea at various Goulding locations around Ireland to make GEN (Goulding Enhanced Nitrogen). While most other Protected Urea products available on the Irish market today reduce the losses of Ammonia by volatilisation compared to untreated Urea only, NSN reduces the loss of Nitrogen to the environment through all 3 pathways (volatilisation, denitrification and leaching) compared with untreated Urea.

How does GEN work?

GEN uses a proven method to inhibit both volatilisation and nitrification. GEN sequesters the fuel sources for Urease, Nitrobacter and Nitrosomonas (which are Nickel, Iron and Copper respectively) in the microenvironment around the GEN granule. For example, GEN sequesters the Nickel away from the Urease enzyme, diminishing the enzymes effect on the Urea granule and reducing the loss of Ammonia (NH₃).

Is it true that Protected Urea products cannot be blended with Phosphate?

Unlike other Protected Urea products on the market, GEN is an organic carboxylic co-polymer (carbohydrate). While most other Protected Urea products are not compatible to blend with Phosphate, the stability provided to GEN by its patented composition means that the efficacy of GEN in NS and NPKS blends is not compromised. As such, Gouldings provide GEN-PKS blends as standard, such as Sweet 18s, to the Irish market with full confidence in product integrity.

What are the Agronomic benefits of using GEN


A comprehensive series of independent, fully replicated trials in the UK since 2010 have demonstrated GEN to be significantly better than urea in terms of crop response and as reliable and effective a source of N as ammonium nitrate (AN).

The graph above summarises the average results from a series of six independent trials on wheat run over two crop years in which GEN was compared against AN and urea.

Taking a value of €160 per tonne of grass DM, the net value of using GEN on grassland in this trial was €62.84 per hectare


An average yield gain of 0.73 tonnes per hectare was observed over 239 trials on Maize in USA.

What are the Economic benefits of using GEN

As well as the financial gains from increased yields over other Urea, there are considerable financial gains in switching for CAN to GEN. As GEN is produced from a cheaper source of Nitrogen (Urea) than CAN, it can still be a cheaper source of nitrogen on a per unit basis depending on market dynamics.

What are the Environmental benefits of using GEN

In comparison to Urea, GEN provides numerous proven environmental benefits. These include reductions in Ammonia emissions, reductions in GHG emissions and reductions in Nitrate leaching. Studies have shown a 35% reduction in ammonia released from GEN in comparison Urea, a 54% reduction of the Nitrous Oxide released in comparison to UAN and a 21% reduction in the amount of Nitrate leached from the soil in comparison to Urea.
